Extend Through It

Problem

You want to gain extra distance off of your tee shots.

Cure

Instead of focusing on getting the most extension as you take the club back, focus on gaining more during the forward swing. If you can get a lot of extension going through the ball, you know you had enough when as you took the ball back.

Therapy

In order to make a full extension back and through, you need to maintain proper balance and posture throughout the shot. If you lose your balance or posture, your body and arms will try to compensate for it, preventing you to be able to fully extend through the shot. Practice swinging barefoot or in old sneakers to help you avoid swinging too quickly. Stop your swing shortly after impact, where your arms should be fully extended. Look to see where they are positioned. Now, move your arms out to where you want them to be at this point. Take a minute to visualize the swing needed to get your arms in this position. Swing again; repeat the drill until you actually reach this extension position in your swing.
