Tip From the Archives
Excessive Loft
Problem
You feel that you are getting too much loft with your irons.
Cure
Check to make sure you are not trying to add distance by hitting the ball during the upswing. This will cause the ball to fly higher than planned with this club.
Therapy
Work on compressing the ball against the clubface. To do this, let your hands lead the downswing and make a descending blow onto the ball. This will help you get the proper loft with your irons. A trick to help you get this compression is to turn the palm of your trailing hand towards the ground as you approach impact. This may seem strange to you at first because many recreational players tend to have the palm of the trailing hand pointing towards the sky at impact.
