Tip From the Archives

Even V

Problem

It is ideal to have the V shapes that you form with your thumb and forefinger on both hands to point at your trailing shoulder. However, gripping the club with your hands at this position does not feel natural to you or you are not able to hinge your wrists very well.

Cure

You do not have to have both V-shapes pointing towards your back shoulder, just as long as both V-shapes are pointing in the same direction. However, most players swing better when both point towards the trailing shoulder. If you are a right hander with hinging or grip alignment problems, chances are that your left hand is much weaker than your right. You need equal strength in both hands but in daily tasks, you probably use your right hand more often. Lefties have a bit more of an advantage in having even hand strength because they need to use their right hands more than a right hander needs to use their left, since most things are designed for righties.

Therapy

Take a rubber ball in your weaker hand and squeeze the ball over and over again. Be certain to let your pinkie finger to be involved in the action as well. Next, focus on rolling the ball around in your hand while working all of your fingers to complete this action. If you do this on a regular basis, you will build your hand strength and therefore the grip pressure in both hands should become equal. You will then notice straighter drives and a better cocking action in your wrists.
