Tip From the Archives
Drive In Play
Problem
You play poorly on holes that are either very long or narrow.
Cure
Although hitting the ball far and over the hazards is what you want to achieve, it might not be the best idea. Many course architects design these holes to trap you once you attempt this. Take time to imagine what your next shot will look like before driving the ball into their trap. Instead of trying to get past the hazards, it may benefit you more to go around them.
Therapy
Pick the shot and commit yourself to it. To mentally prepare yourself for the tee shot, try to relax your body and then follow your normal preshot routine. Close your eyes, Stretch your neck and shoulder muscles by rolling your head towards your shoulders in circles, in both directions. Cross your arms to press them hard against your ribcage and take a very long, deep breath. Open your eyes and focus only on where you want the ball to land and ignore the hazards or any other part of the course. Start your preshot routine and drive the ball into play.
