Drills To Help You Gain a Wide Swing Arc
Problem
You need to improve your swinging technique to gain extra yardage. You fail to complete your shoulder turn through finish, causing you will to lose accuracy and yardage.
Cure
It is necessary to develop good balance and torque while maintaining a wide swing arc. A proper shoulder turn can help you increase power and accuracy. Try these drills to help you increase your form, swing arc, and shoulder turn.
Therapy
Use a six iron and choke down on the grip. Take a practice swing and keep your position at the top of your backswing. Stand next to a tree and push the end of the club against it. Maintain this pressure and be sure to notice the power you are generating from it. Now step away and practice your swing, while keeping the same feeling of pressure you generated against the tree. Take note that you need to maintain this same swing radius and pressure while you are taking your downswing. Your arms should be extended straight when they are parallel to the ground, your club shaft and shoulders should be parallel to one another, as if forming a box. You will gain distance if you keep your back fairly straight and your chin off of your chest. One true test to see if you are creating a proper shoulder turn is to notice if your chin touches your shoulders at the top of your backswing and at the end of your follow through. If you are fully coiling and uncoiling your upper body during your swing, your shoulder should be brushing under your chin when you complete your backswing and follow through. Focusing on your chin brushing your swing can help distract you from tension and most importantly improve your swing rhythm.
