Dominate It

Problem

You want to gain more accuracy and distance.

Cure

Killing the ball with your dominate hand sounds like a good thing but knowing how to use it correctly will allow you to hit consistent shots.

Therapy

Think about the role of your trailing hand. The only time it really needs any real significant amount of force on the club is as you approach impact. This can be a difficult thing to accept since this is likely our dominate or strongest hand. Practice swinging the club using only your leading hand a couple of times. Notice how it is a combination of gravity and a pulling of your leading hand that moves the club towards the ball. Next, add your trailing hand but only allow your fingertips to hold onto the club. The need to apply pressure to the club about a foot before you approach the ball will be enhanced. Finally, as you regrip the club using both hands, pretend that your trailing hand does not exist on the club until your hands move near your trailing hip on the way down to the ball. Allow your trailing hand to power through the ball and keep this pressure until your hands pass your leading hip during your follow through. Once you find this happening naturally during your swing you should have better control over the ball and hit further than before.
