Tip From the Archives

Distance Reading

Problem

You have a hard time reading the green or making long putts.

Cure

As soon as you can see the green from the distance, study it. Look to see where the hills and valleys are. Sometimes it is hard to read when you are already standing on it but when you take a look from a distance and then when you are on it, it will give you a better assessment on the break.

Therapy

Next time you land the ball onto the green, wait and take a good look at the way the ball rolls when it lands on it. What is the surface of the green like between your ball and the pin? Study any obvious slopes and try to determine your break. Once you stand on the green use this information to help visualize the line, break, and speed needed for your stroke.

This advice requires that I land an approach shot on the green. If I could do that then I would shave about 10 strokes off of my game.

This tip needs to be expanded especially with regards to the above comment by "Dan." Be a conscious golfer. If your approach shot is not hitting the green and giving you good read, pay attention to the golf balls of the other members in your party.
