Tip From the Archives

Dig In

Problem

You have difficulty making contact with the ball in the fairway bunker.

Cure

Remember to swing more with your arms in the fairway bunker. If you swing too much with your legs and body it will cause you to lose your footing and miss hit the ball.

Therapy

Be certain to match the amount you dig into the sand with your feet with where you grip the club. If you dig your feet into the ground two inches, choke up on the club two inches as well. Play more club out of the bunker; so if you normally would play a 7 iron from this distance, you might want to play a 5 or a 6 iron. It is okay to allow a little hip and knee movement but the majority of the swing should come from your arms and shoulders.
