Tip From the Archives
Different Coil
Problem
You want to try a different driving style that coils for more power.
Cure
Try a more upper body dominant swing, using only your legs as support.
Therapy
Stand fairly tall and square to the target with a little more than half of your weight placed on your back leg. Place the ball so that it is aligned with inside of your forward foot. Keep your hands ahead of the ball and your head behind it. Your lead arm and club should form a straight line. Your trailing arm and shoulder should sit lower than the lead. During your backswing, make a powerful turn and lean your upper body away from the target. Your swinging arc should be shallow. At the top of your swing, your lead shoulder should be turned as far as possible under your chin to help create a strong coil with your lower body resisting it. Your forward knee and hip will begin to move towards the target as you begin to uncoil into your forward swing. The heel on your forward foot might even lift off of the ground if you created a very powerful swing. During the downswing, the angle of the clubshaft should match the angle of the forearm of your trailing arm. At this point, if you notice that your hands are a couple of inches lower than they were at address; this indicates that you applied enough stress on the clubhead to create lag into impact. As you approach impact, your lead arm and club will again form a straight line. The lead side of your body should straighten to help support the powerful contact with the ball.
