Depression in the Fairway

Problem

Your ball is sitting in a depression and you have about 140 yards before you reach the green.

Cure

You need to select a more lofted club from this distance than you normally would. Good options in this situation would be to use a hybrid, 9 wood, or your 7 iron.

Therapy

We will assume that have selected your seven iron. Due to the nature of the shot, it will provide you with the same distance as you would expect to achieve with your six iron. So set the ball in the middle of your stance. Keep your hands ahead of the ball and take a compact backswing. Try not to hinge your wrists too much at the top of your swing because it will cause you to flick your wrists excessively during your forward swing. You need to pull the club down hard in your downswing to help get the ball up and out of the depression.
