Tip From the Archives

Deeper Divots

Problem

You really do not feel that you have a steep swing arc yet you are taking deep divots with a loss of distance.

Cure

Check to make sure you are not moving your legs too early during the swing. If you fire your hips too soon, your upper body will tip back and you will end up flipping the club.

Therapy

Try to keep the club a little lower and more in front of you. If needed, swing more around your body for a flatter arc. Keep in mind if your leading wrist leans forward, it will prevent a full release.

When I whip my hips early in the swing, my arms swing straight down. The divots are super deep but the ball doesn't even move more than a few feet. My arms hurt just thinking about that feeling. It's funny because I never really thought of my hips being the cause until I read this tip. Sometimes when I swing like this, it does feel like I'm trying to help the ball up even though I am making a V-style swing with my irons.
