Deep Rough

Problem

Your ball is lying in the deep rough and you usually have difficulty reaching the green because you use a sweeping or scooping motion.

Cure

Your swing is too flat to get the ball out of the rough. You should take the club back steeply with a powerful descending blow to help shoot the ball up, out of the rough. Keep in mind, the deeper the rough, the greater lofted club needed and the farther back in your stance you should play the ball.

Therapy

Select a short or medium iron and choke down on the grip. Use a weak grip and allow your wrists to hinge during your backswing. When you start your forward swing, focus on trying to fire your back arm and shoulder through the ball, towards the target to allow a forceful hit into the back of the ball.
