Tip From the Archives

Curve It

Problem

You want to learn how to make the ball curve around obstacles.

Cure

Change the way you set up to the ball and not the way you swing the club. Be sure to avoid allowing your hands or shoulders to dominate the swing or it can change the clubface position or swing path, respectively.

Therapy

First aim your clubface towards where you want the ball to land. Next, align your body in the same direction you want the ball to start to fly off of the clubface. Then swing the club along your body. So if you want the ball to start out by flying right and then curve out so it ends left of the target, aim your clubface left of the target and your body well to the right of it. Play around with your aim on the driving range by aiming the clubface square to the target and then to the left or right to change the severity of the curve. Practice each adjustment a few times to gain proper feel and to make sure each adjustment is repeatable.
