Tip From the Archives
Cover the Cup
Problem
Your putts tend to come up short of the hole.
Cure
Keep in mind that people tend to spend the most amount of time standing on the green between six feet and six inches from the cups edge. Not only will the ball behave differently closer to the hole with short putts but if the ball is sitting down in a footprint, it will make it harder to get the ball to start rolling than it does when you are putting further away. Try increasing the speed of your putts. If you are not hitting the ball hard enough, it is more likely to fall victim to the design, footprints, or the break around the edge of the cup.
Therapy
So, putt the ball so that it rolls at a speed that would leave it about seventeen inches past the hole or half of the length of your putter, if you had missed the putt. An easy way to visualize this is to think of the hole being covered up. Simply put a coin on the green and pretend that it is the hole. Now practice putting the ball so that it stops rolling somewhere between sixteen and eighteen inches past the coin.
