Correct Grip
Problem
You do not think there is anything wrong with your set up or swing. However, you have a problem with power and accuracy.
Cure
Practice shortening your thumb extension on the grip. If your thumb is extended too far, it will weaken your grip and prevent a proper wrist cock. A poor wrist movement will prevent you from squaring the clubface through impact. This is due to bringing the shaft too far back at the top of your swing and casting the club early in the downswing.
Therapy
An important tip to remember is that the hands should take up as little space as possible on the grip. If you are having difficulty gripping the club without over extending your thumb, you should check to make sure you are using the proper grip size for you. One way to test this is to make sure that your fingers on your top hand are barely able touch your palm when gripping the club. Compare your glove size to the grips on your club by using the table below:
| Glove Size | Grip Size |
|---|---|
| Extra Large and Up | Midsize to Jumbo |
| Large | Standard to Midsize |
| Medium Large | Standard |
| Medium | Standard |
| Small | Undersize to Standard |
| Glove Size | Grip Size |
|---|---|
| Large | Oversize to Standard |
| Medium | Undersize |
| Small/Junior | Junior to Undersize |
If that is not the problem then put a rubber band around your index finger and thumb then grip the golf club. Practice swinging this way to help you to feel how you should reduce the amount of space being used on the grip.
