Consistent Pitching
Problem
You do not have the feel for pitching or are not very consistent at it. If you square your body to the target line, you will end up flicking your hands to help attempt to make clean contact.
Cure
You need to synchronize your arm and body movements to help develop consistent pitching; the faster your body turns during the shot, the longer length needed during your swing. Remember to always match the length of your backswing with the length of your follow through.
Therapy
For a shorter swing, try an open lower body position. Take a narrow stance with a natural knee flex and your body weight balanced slightly forward, towards the target. Place the ball in the center of your stance and allow your hands to hang slightly ahead of the ball. Relax your legs and make a smooth swing, so that your arm length matches the speed of your body turning. The length of your swing should match the distance of the desired shot. Now, imagine that you are standing in front of the face on a giant clock. Practice swinging and turning slowly while bringing your club so that it is pointing at 9 and 3 on the clock. Then take a slightly faster turn with your club pointing at 10 and 2 on the clock. Finally, turn even faster so that the club points to 11 and 1 on the clock. Notice as you increased your turning speed and club length that the ball flew further and further. Practice this until you have a good feel for what kind of distance you can achieve at each of these points.
