Compression with Irons

Problem

You are puzzled about what makes a professional golfer a good iron player.

Cure

Recreational players often chicken wing their lead arm, try to scoop the ball up, or do just about anything else but compress it. Whereas professional players lead their swing with their hands first through impact and get good compression.

Therapy

Take a longer iron and choke down on the grip. Set the ball near the middle of your stance. Swing the club halfway back. Hit down on the ball. You want to feel like the hands are just ahead of the golf ball as your weight is moving onto the forward leg. Hold your position when the clubhead is a foot past your forward leg. At this point, you want the majority of your weight placed on your forward side. Both arms should be straight at this time. Your leading wrist should be flat while your trailing wrist will be bent. Work on gaining this position just after contact to make better contact with your irons.
