Common Sand Errors
Problem
You have difficulty in the sand bunkers but are unable to pinpoint the cause.
Cure
Practice making shots in the sand. As you do, try to notice if you are making any of these sandwedge mistakes.
Therapy
1. Are you taking a backswing that is too flat, low, or short? 2. Are you keeping your hands ahead of the ball? If so, then the leading edge of the wedge will make contact with the sand when you want the bottom of the club or flange to enter the sand first. 3. Did you remember to open your stance a little with an open clubface? An open clubface will help the wedge to move into the sand and under the ball easier. 4. Are you playing the ball too far back in your stance? Ideally, you want the ball to be just ahead of the center of your stance when you are hitting out of the sand and never behind the center of your stance. 5. Are you gripping the club too tightly? If so, then this will create tension in your hands and arms.
