Common Pitching Errors

Problem

You are having difficulty pitching and cannot pinpoint the problem.

Cure

One or a combination of these common errors can prevent a good pitch. 1. You try to lift the ball up into the air by taking too short of a backswing with a long follow through. 2. Too much weight shift on your back leg during the backswing. This will cause you to duff or hit the ground behind the ball. 3. You have no wrist hinge during the backswing. 4. The wrist on your forward arm breaks down or hinges too much through the impact zone; which is the most common cause of a poor pitch in golf. 5. You have a poor swinging plane during your backswing.

Therapy

To help check if you have a correct backswing plane while pitching is to see if you are bringing the club back so that it is parallel to the target. Lay a long club on the ground with the shaft touching the outside of your back foot between the arch and toes. Line it up so that it is parallel to the target. As you take the club back to the point of being parallel to the ground, it should be aligned directly over the club lying on the ground.
