Coffee Cans

Problem

Regardless how much you try, you cannot seem to slow down your backswing.

Cure

Sometimes when you are trying hard to kill the ball, it can be difficult to stop yourself from whipping the club back. Practice your swing while standing on coffee cans so you do not dare to bring the club back too fast.

Therapy

Set a practice mat up on a box about the same height of the cans. Place a coffee can under each foot and practice swinging. If you swing the club too fast, you will fall over because when your legs or body are swinging in a sudden and different motion than your arms, you will lose your balance. When you are out on the course and find you are taking the club back too fast, either imagine you are on the cans or bring the lids along and stand on them for better reminder. Standing on the lids will make you lose some of your traction and scare you into taking the slower backswing.

You must be psychic! I have just finished swinging on a 'slippery floor' (deliberately) to stop me swinging too quickly in either direction. There is no danger of me falling over, but the knowledge that I am on a less than solid base, does almost the same thing. I will give something similar to the coffee cans a go. Perhaps standing on my slip on shoes or a pair of slippers and going down the shaft might do the trick? Thankyou.

You'll break an ankle(s) with coffee cans. Try anything that's inflatable and partially inflate them. For example, stand on the edge of an air mattress.
