Tip From the Archives
Closed Clubface
Problem
You close the clubface too early during your swing, causing inconsistent contact with the ball.
Cure
Stop your swing at different points of your backswing with an iron to check the position of the clubface. The clubface should still be square to the target when your hands are positioned in front of your back leg. The clubface is closing too early if the toe is ahead of the heel of the club.
Therapy
Unfasten your glove and secure a tee in it so that the sharp end points out and the top is against the back of your hand. Practice slowly taking the club back in a half backswing. Notice the clockwise rotation of your forward hand and arm as you do this. You want the tee to point towards the target and the toe of the club should point towards the sky when the clubshaft is parallel to the ground. Your first few shots might push to the right but after taking several practice swings, you should notice square and consistent contact with the ball.
