Clock Putting

Problem

You understand how and where the ball will break but it still does not roll into the hole.

Cure

You not only need to know the speed and break of the ball; you also need to know exactly where the ball will enter the cup in order to accurately determine your line. Try to learn to determine how the lip of the cup affects the way the ball will roll into it and where the best angle is to enter it.

Therapy

A good drill to practice hitting the ball into the cup from specific directions is to place three tees around the cup at about a quarter of an inch away from it. Place one tee across the hole from you and imagine that this is the twelve marker on a clock. Now place a tee at the four marker and another at the eight marker. Find a location about ten feet away from the hole that will allow you to roll the ball into the space between the twelve and four markers. Then move and do the same for the four and eight markers as well as the eight and twelve markers. If the ball bounces off of one of the tees, reevaluate your line and the break and try again until you can successfully hit it into the space without touching the tees on the way into the cup. This drill will help you putt the ball into the hole by reading the break and the lip of the cup. To further hone your skills, try placing the tees at the twelve, three, six, and nine markers around the hole.
