Chunking Fat Hits
Problem
The club hits the ground first and then the ball, causing the ball to fly much shorter than planned.
Cure
Avoid trying to help lift or scoop the ball up with the clubhead. When you do this, it causes your head, spine and weight to shift back with an early release into the ground.
Therapy
You do not need to help the ball up; let the loft of the club do the work for you. Focus on shifting your body weight forward during the downswing. By the time you finish your swing, you will want the majority of your body weight placed on your front side with your chest over your forward leg. If you have difficulty getting a natural feel for this forward shift, try hitting on a downhill lie. You will have to lean your body weight forward in order to level your hips with the slope and to avoid hitting the ground.
