Chip and Run

Problem

The green is wet or it is windy and you have a short distance from the green but need enough loft to make it over a small obstacle or a high fringe.

Cure

A chip and run has a lower trajectory than a standard chip and higher than a bump and run. The ball should land on the front part of the green and roll to the hole. Depending on the amount of roll needed, you can use any club from a 7 iron through a sand wedge for a chip and run. If you want a lot of roll, use a seven iron or for a limited amount of roll, use a sand wedge.

Therapy

Place the ball off of your back foot. Take a narrow and slightly open stance. Put more than half of your weight onto the inner part of your forward leg. Choke down on the grip by an inch. Keep your hands ahead of the ball with a firm lead hand and the wrist on your trailing hand flexed. Take a shortened backswing that is controlled by rocking your shoulders so your arms move as if you are making a strong putt. Your follow through should match the length of your backswing.
