Tip From the Archives
Caught in the Grass
Problem
You have a greenside shot and the ball is caught in the deep rough.
Cure
Try making a V shaped swing to help you hit the club down on the ball without getting the clubhead caught in the grass.
Therapy
Play the ball far back in your stance; it can be placed so far back that it is past your trailing foot. Use your sand wedge and focus on using the sole of the club to help it move through the grass.
I've also tried opening the club face. Since the front edge of the club slices across the grass at an angle, it is less likely to get caught in long grass and so it is easier to control distance. It will cause the ball to come out higher and more to the right (align with club face, not swing direction). If you use a pitching wedge, you can get about the same loft as a SW.
