Burnt Rough

Problem

Your ball landed in very dry or burned out rough and you still have a long distance before reaching the pin.

Cure

You probably are used to playing a hybrid or utility club from this distance; however, you will need to select an iron that will give you the same distance to help cut through the stiff, dry rough.

Therapy

Take a stronger grip to help prevent the clubface from twisting in the rough. Practice hitting from similar grass to help you find the correct feel for resistance. When the ball is sitting down in the dried rough, it is much less likely to hit a flyer because the lack of moisture in the grass. If the ball is sitting on top of the burned grass, you might want to select a more lofted club and take a softer swing to help prevent a flyer shot.
