Tip From the Archives
Bunker Distances
Problem
You are having difficulty getting out of the sand bunkers.
Cure
Although the length of the follow through determines how far the ball will fly, you should not be afraid to have a high finish. Finish higher than usual when hitting out of the sand bunker.
Therapy
Even with a shorter bunker shot it is important to have an aggressive enough swing that ends at least as high as your chest. Your hands should be about head high for an average shot. For a longer sand bunker lie, you want to finish with a full turn and arm swing. You do not need to plow the clubhead deep into the sand. Focus on cutting into the sand a little two inches behind the ball with an open clubface. As with any sand shot, remember to continuously accelerate through the shot.
