Tip From the Archives
Biceps
Problem
You want to improve your driving distance.
Cure
Increase the strength of your arms and shoulders by lifting weights.
Therapy
Lift two hand weights up, over your head. When you bring the weights up, you want to turn them so the ends of the weights are pointing towards each other. Turn the weights, facing forwards before you bring them down, in front of your shoulders. Then straighten your arms down by your sides. Feel free to bring the weights up quickly but if you really want to increase the strength in your biceps, make sure you bring them back down slowly.
If you want a fast swing you have to increase the swing speed. Increasing muscle while maintaining/increasing range of motion will help you swing faster and create a more powerful base. With weights, do core lifts (from the ground) and use resistance bands/pilates movements to reduce injury, stabalize core and gain ROM of primary joints. Biceps are going to do very little for you. Its is an antagonist muscle in the golf swing. Concentrate on the big muscle which actually help a golf swing. If you don't know what those muscles are, attach a band (near the floor) and grip the band like a golf grip - slowly mimic the swing and hold at the top for 5 seconds. Now you know. Also holding at the top of the back swing - will help you create muscle memory for the slot at the top of the backswing.
I've been doing a similar weight exercise because I lack the arm strength for good distances and it has helped dramatically. I feel sore in the chest, shoulders and upper arms after doing this. I haven't been turning the weights towards one another; I suspect if I do, it will help improve my release as well.
Agreed with gmoney, biceps have little to do with the golf swing. Also, the recommended exercise is extremely vague in what it is trying to explain. What it is trying to explain is a curl (biceps/forearms) into a overhead or military press (shoulders/triceps). Either way, the advice is putting too much emphasis on creating a strong swing with your arms. Go ask any golf coach where the power of the golf swing comes from...Bet you a hundred they don't say the arms. Power comes from the legs, hips, and core with the arms playing a minor role. Want to hit big? Get your full body involved and quit trying to swing the golf club with your arms alone.
