Ball Selection

Problem

You are playing at a different course than usual and wonder what kind of balls to use.

Cure

Try to find out what the greens are like, based on photos to determine size and speed based on reviews and weather. If you cannot, it might be best to bring two different types of balls with you and determine it as you play.

Therapy

Two piece balls will typically provide more distance so you should consider using them if you are playing slow, long, or wet greens. If you are playing fast, steep, or small greens, it might be better played with a multilayer or urethane covered ball. Take into consideration of the temperature and how it affects the speed of the greens. When the grass wilts in summer, it will slow the ball down because the droopy blades will make it more difficult for the ball to roll through them. When the grass is swollen due to cold, the ball is more likely to run faster over the blades of grass.

The question of the righr ball is vital for every player. It is totally ignored usually. Folk plump down the Titleist,Srixon that the PGA tour professionals use. A completely stupid and self destructive side effect of the "Power and distance at all costs arrogance". They would probably score much better with a lower compression ball than one of the high compression ones. This is a reminder to give ourselves every opportunity to improve our game. Choosing a more suitable ball will save strokes, guaranteed. In cold weather, harder balls are like rocks when hit.

My wife has a slow club head speed and now hitting the softer/low compression (usually colored) balls has made a world of difference.
