Backyard Practice
Problem
You want to improve how you practice
Cure
Instead of just practicing one type of a swing, you should practice like you play. When you practice just one kind of swing, you risk training your muscle memory and mind to do only that type of swing. Then you go out to play and cannot hit any of your other clubs as well as you should.
Therapy
Practice with at least three clubs. If you really need to work on your chipping, practice your chips only a dozen times or less before switching to another club. What will really help you is if you changed your lie while practicing. A hilly backyard would be ideal so you can vary your lie. Use a score card from a course you have played a few times and pretend you are playing it. Even if you are just hitting into a net in a small backyard, move around and find spots where you can simulate the feeling and lie that you are taking your second shot in the fairway. If you can, let a patch of grass grow a little longer or trim some of it shorter than you normally would so you can vary the shots even more.
