Tip From the Archives

Backwards Shaft Tilt

Problem

You are having difficulties with your bunker shots.

Cure

Do not make direct contact with the ball as you would in the fairway. Plan on entering the sand a couple of inches behind the ball. Do not focus on trying to get the perfect landing; just work on splashing sand up onto the green.

Therapy

Place the ball forward in your stance with the majority of your body weight placed on your forward leg. Try setting up with the shaft of the club leaning away from the target to help you use the bounce of the sand wedge as you enter the sand. This will allow the sand to splash with less resistance.
