Angle Your Feet for More Control
Problem
Decreased flexibility can prevent proper hip rotation and therefore power, causing you to sway during your backswing. This is a very common problem for senior golfers because their muscles tighten as they age, inhibiting a proper turn for a full swing.
Cure
By angling your feet so the toes either flare out or point in can help you establish more control over your swing and help encourage a proper hip rotation for more power.
Therapy
Swaying your lower body during your backswing while using a driver can be prevented by creating a steadier stance by turning your forward foot out. If you flare out the foot by about forty five degrees, it will help your downswing by allowing your forward hip to turn towards the target faster and free your arms so they can move the club without resistance for a more powerful swing. Many golfers find that it is just as useful to turn the toe in on the back foot instead to reduce swaying and to encourage a proper pivot. When you are using shorter irons, it is helpful to flare your forward foot out just a little and narrow your stance. This will provide enough stability to prevent sway and keep your body centered over the ball. If you forward foot is square, it will prevent hip rotation and steepen the swinging arch for a higher ball flight and more backspin, which would be ideal when using your wedges.
