Tip From the Archives

All in the Hips

Problem

Slouching or bending from the waist, not the hips. This will cause a poor rotation so you will lose distance and power.

Cure

Bending at the waist allows rotation to happen. It is important to shift and turn without ever bending forward.

Therapy

Transfer your weight onto your right hip during your backswing so your right knee will bend, causing your right hip to move back a little. Your left foot and thigh must stay inside and flex slightly towards the right knee. As your hips turn, the hips and right knee maintain their original flex. If your tailbone is in its original position, then you know you have maintained a proper hip flex. Avoid moving the right hip towards the ball during the downswing because it will destroy your hip flex. Your weight should shift to your left side of your body during your downswing. While approaching impact, your right knee and thigh will remain inside as they slowly move left. Although your hips are moving to allow your hands and club to quickly turn through to impact, your left leg and hip will rise slightly but maintain its flex. Losing your hip flex at impact will reduce the power of your swing.
