Tip From the Archives

All in the Details

Problem

You feel as if you are overlooking something in your setup routine.

Cure

Keep your setup routine simple and the same with every shot. If you worry about adding in too much, then you make room for anxiety and swing mistakes.

Therapy

What you may feel is insecurity about the way you observe the lie. Go through mental checklists before you even select your club. Know what kind of lie you have from the length of grass, how deep the ball is setting in the grass, and how wet or firm the grass is. Remember that the ball will carry less to a green that is elevated in comparison to a green that is below you. Pay attention to the wind because this will also alter your club selection. Most importantly, trust your instincts. If you go against them, it will show in your swing through hesitation or a swing flaw due to anxiety over the shot. After all, confidence might be the most important thing to include in your setup routine.
