Aim With a Sticker
Problem
You are having difficulty controlling your yardages and accuracy with your short irons.
Cure
You might be disrupting you tempo by taking too short of a backswing and then swinging too hard on the way down. Take a normal backswing to help keep your swing in rhythm.
Therapy
Focus on using the back of your forward hand to help you aim. This is because you will not release your hands and so the clubface position will imitate that of the back of your hand. Put a sticker on the center of the back of your hand or glove. Use one that is bright and will stand out easily. Just as you want the clubface to be square to the target at impact, you will also want the sticker to be facing the target. Practice your swing without a ball until you can consistently get the sticker pointing at the bottom of your swing. Once you do, practice hitting a bucket of balls using all of your short irons in a random order.
