Tip From the Archives

Aim the Rake

Problem

Your sand shots to do not go where you are aiming.

Cure

Remember that you need to use an open stance when you are in a sand trap. So for a right handed person, this means you need to aim left of your intended target or for a left handed person, you need to aim towards the right of the target.

Therapy

Although it is difficult to do, you need to practice your sand shots. Even if this means paying for a round and only hitting out of the bunker. Look at the score sheet to see what par is for each hole; hit three more shots out of the sand bunker than what is listed as par or spend 15 minutes in a sand bunker per hole. Work on getting the ball as close to the pin as possible. Lay a rake down in the sand pointing towards the right of the target if you are left handed or towards the left if you are right handed. Now lay a club down pointing towards the pin, along your target line. Aim your feet, hips, and shoulders along the angle of the rake. Set the face square to the target line. Instead of swinging inside of the target line, you want to swing in the same direction as your body is aimed. Just make sure to accelerate through the shot.
