Tip From the Archives
Against the Fringe
Problem
The ball is sitting on the outer edge of the fringe, against the rough. The clubhead will have to move through the rough before you make contact with the ball.
Cure
There are two basic ways to approach this shot. You could hit a soft flop to get the ball to pop up high and not worry about the clubhead getting caught in the rough. Another option is to make a putting type stroke with your sandwedge.
Therapy
If the grass is not excessively high in the rough, you might find it easier to control the shot if you use a putting stroke with your sandwedge. Simply set up and swing as if you were using your putter. The blade design of the sandwedge will help you through the rough and you will keep the ball low to the ground for a nice roll.
..or use the toe end of your putter. This cleaves through the rough and is very effective indeed. Practice makes perfect.
or you could always try the foot-wedge...
