Against a Stick

Problem

Your ball is lying against a branch, stick, twig or other obstruction in the fairway and you cannot afford an unplayable lie penalty.

Cure

You have to be careful to avoid moving the stick because if the ball moves at all, then you will add a stoke penalty without any gain. As long as you can make solid contact with the ball, it is not necessary to take a drop.

Therapy

You will need a sharp and steep downward blow onto the ball. Stand a little more upright than usual and place the ball back in your stance. Your wrists should hinge quickly as you take the club back in a three quarter backswing. Although the backswing will be shortened, you will still need to make a full hip and shoulder turn. You should feel as if your hands are pulling the club down forcefully to help you knock through the obstruction and into the ball.
