Add Distance and Overspin when Laying Up

Problem

You want to draw the ball using your 5-iron and gain additional yardage. This can be achieved by adding overspin to the shot.

Cure

Increase the rotation of your forearms and hands during impact. This will help the toe of the club lead at impact, closing the face slightly.

Therapy

You need to find the correct timing of release during impact when your back forearm rotates counterclockwise over your forward arm. Swing the club back a little higher than your hips so that the toe of the club is pointing up. Slowly bring the club down as you rotate your trailing forearm counterclockwise. When you reach impact, stop your swing so that you can see how the clubface is aimed. It should be closed a little for a draw or square to the target line for the ball to fly straight; but if it is open, you did not rotate the forearm enough and are likely to slice the ball.
