Tip From the Archives
Active Wrists
Problem
Your wrists are too active during your wedge shots.
Cure
Even though the distance you desire is short, you still need a good shoulder turn. Find an old broom and practice cocking your wrists with it as you work on your backswing. If your wrists are trying to flick the club or your wrists are rolling into impact you will feel the mistake by the broom handle smacking into your side.
Therapy
Move your hands down the handle at address so that if feels as if you are holding one of your wedges. Swing your arms back into the backswing but pause the motion once your arms about waist high. Now look to see where the handle is pointing. It should be pointing towards the ball if you have cocked your wrists properly. Keep this wrist cock as you begin your forward swing and your trailing wrist should keep this angle into impact. As you enter the impact zone the handle should be leaning towards the target. This will look exaggerated with the broom handle compared to what you might be used to seeing with your wedges. At this point, your shoulders should appear to be open. Keep moving your shoulders through the shot into the follow through.
