Tip From the Archives
Abbreviated Pitch
Problem
You have a hard time stopping your swing halfway for making an abbreviated swing while pitching.
Cure
Focus more on the speed you turn your body instead of your swing length.
Therapy
Go to the driving range and only use the clubs you normally use to pitch with. Get a feel for how fast you swing your pitching wedge on a normal shot without any specific target. How far did it go? Slow your turning speed down a little and take note of the difference in distance. Continue to slow your swing down and keep track of each yardage. If you were swinging at 50 mph, you might expect the ball to land 50 yards away. Find and compare each turning speed and yardage for every pitch shot.
try using 3 set swings with a pitching wedge. 1. back swing slow, left arm as far only as 7:30. Full follow through. 2. Same as above but left arm to 9;00. Full follow through 3. As before left arm to 10:30. Use soft hands. take 10 shots with 1, measure the average distance. write it down. Do the same for 2 & 3. Do the same with Gap wedge & sand wedge. The distance achieved for 3 for each club should be about twice that for 1. ie PW 3:- 100yds: 2:- 75yds: 3:- 50yds This is a finesse swing.
