A Three Dimensional Swing for Better Contact
Problem
Failure to make proper contact with the ball due to a poor swing; causing you to hook, slice, top, or duff. You fail to make solid contact if you move your right elbow up and down because you don’t get the depth you need to make a full backswing turn.
Cure
Your golf swing needs proper height, width and depth working separately and you need to blend them together.
Therapy
Try to improve the vertical hinge of your hands and wrists as the club moves up and down towards the ball. Put a lower iron in front of your chest so the shaft is at a 90 degree angle to the ground and raise the club head over your head and then back down again. Your wrists will hinge upward as it should feel when you lever the club up during your backswing. As your hands and wrists unhinged when you moved it back down is the same motion you should feel in your forward swing. Now take a backswing without a club by turning your shoulders back and extend your left arm as far as possible while you throw punch to your right. Then begin your forward swing by extending and punching your right arm to feel how wide your swing should be. You will need to lead with your forearms to feel the proper depth of your swing. Your right forearm will pull your hips and shoulders into a fairly level backswing. As you take a 3/4 backswing with a lower iron, make sure your right elbow is over your right hip at about the same height it was at address to ensure proper depth. Your wrists will hinge the club up and your left arm will provide the width you need to make a solid contact.
