A Proper Set Up for a Solid Swing

Problem

Trying to hit at the ball will cause you to lead your swing with your hands instead of your body or stopping the swing at impact. Your palm might be facing up during the backswing, causing poor contact and unpredictable ball flight.

Cure

You should not swing to hit the ball but to try to swing though a few inches past the ball to encourage the club to continue to speed up during impact. Your palm should be at a 45 degree angle from the ground so the clubface makes a square contact and proper swing arc.

Therapy

During the takeaway, use the power of your shoulders and back to help your wrists and hands move together as one unit. As you reach the top of your swing, it is very crucial that you maintain the same elbow distance you had at setup. Allow your knees to pivot with your hips as you rotate your way to the top. Squat so your bottom closer to the ground and aimed towards the target. As you transition into your forward swing, it should feel as if your bottom is pushing off of the ground, creating a powerful momentum. Your body should lead your arms and club on the downswing and throughout the forward swing by moving first. Your arms will naturally drop without losing any angle between the club shaft and your forward arm. The rotation of your hips should pull your forward leg straight during your downswing. Do not try to hit the ball but focus on swinging though the ball a few inches after impact by dragging your arms, hands, and the club past impact with a rotation of your body all the way into finish.
