Tip From the Archives
A Powerful Position
Problem
You try to hit the ball as hard as you can with every long golf club in your bag.
Cure
There are other ways to gain distance without having to kill the ball. Try to swing at 80 percent power and you should improve your swing.
Therapy
Sometimes telling you to not to kill it is not enough. If this is the case, try to find another key thought to help change your focus. Concentrate on pressing your leading thumb against the shaft of the club. Notice how at the top of your backswing that you can feel your thumb under the club, now picture it pointing at the flag. The club will be parallel to the ground with your wrist fully cocked. This will set you up for a great position to unwind into the ball. Remember to hit through the ball and not at it. Continue to accelerate your swing until the clubhead is at least 8 inches past the ball.
