Tip From the Archives

A Lighter Grip

Problem

You want to improve on distance and accuracy.

Cure

Even if you have been playing golf for several decades, your grip could be hindering your accuracy and driving skills. Check your grip pressure a couple of times a year to help keep your game feeling fresh and tension free.

Therapy

Grip the club as hard as you can and consider that grip pressure a 10. Then swing it using just your thumb and forefingers of both of your hands and call it a 1. The swing will feel simple, powered only by the turn of your body and gravity. Hit half of a bucket of balls this way to help ingrain this feeling into your muscle memory. When you regrip the club at a normal grip pressure, think about the extremes of 1 and 10 to find a grip pressure that is a little under 4. Hit the other half of the bucket of balls thinking only of maintaining this grip pressure. You will likely discover that not only is the pressure in your hands better but your timing, tempo, and release are all improved as well.

How much forward press should one have if any at all on irons and woods.

This hint was given to me a couple of weeks ago by a club pro that I see. It allowed me to have 3 under on the weekend and drop my handicap to an 18 for the first time. A great tip and one worth checking every time you play, not just a few times a year!
