A Downhill Trap Shot

Problem

You have a downhill lie in a sand bunker. The ball is on a slope in the sand and you stand with your leading foot down slope.

Cure

As you would on any hilly lie, align your hips and shoulders so that they are parallel to the slope of the hill.

Therapy

You need to take an open stance and aim your body a little to the left of the target while aiming the clubface at the target. You will need to use a steep swing and play the ball off your back foot to help avoid digging the club too deeply into the sand. Choke down on the grip and quickly cock your wrists during the backswing to open the clubface a little. Keep the club low during the follow through. Be sure your upper bodyweight stays slightly ahead of the ball as you hit through while your back arm quickly follows behind it.
